Distropical Encounters - In extenso Offsite at TARS Gallery, Bangkok

The Portuguese artist, Mauro Cerqueira is one of the invited artists of this creative residence and collaborative project. The final result will be disclosed at the collective exhibition on January 27.

Mauro Cerqueira’s method of working is multidisciplinary, encompassing not only photography, video and drawing but also performance, painting and sculpture. One of his preferred formats is printed publication, which enables him to elaborate on content in a narrative way. Cerqueira’s projects in recent years have been inspired by the environment in which he lived and worked in the old city district of Porto where his studio was situated in a building that has been razed meanwhile for redevelopment. In the alleyways of the district he found an inexhaustible repertoire of everyday scenes, people and objects; the residents and architecture of this traditional urban district on the threshold of change were made into the protagonists of his artistic works.

Cerqueira’s approach is shaped by authenticity and a deep bond with his subjects and questions a political and economic system that shuts out specific, traditional ways of life, attempting to banish them from the modern city. Art and life are always indivisible in Cerqueira’s art, and it is this precise characteristic that constitutes his works’ power of expression and compelling urgency.

Mauro Cerqueira was born in 1982 in Portugal.
He studied Fine arts at Escola Superior Artística in Porto (PT) He lives and works in Porto.

Distropical Encounters In extenso Offsite at TARS Gallery, Bangkok Residency : 14 january > 26 january 2018 Exhibition : 27 january > 31 march 2018 Opening : saturday 27 january at 6pm​ Samira Ahmadi Ghotbi Merlin Carpenter and Tobias Kaspar Mauro Cerqueira Sébastien Maloberti Tanat Teeradakorn Raphaela Vogel Venice Wanakornkul          As part of its bi-annual international “Off-site” project, In extenso presents DISTROPICAL ENCOUNTERS , both a residency and exhibition project hosted by TARS Gallery in Bangkok.          Several foreign artists will discover the urban and cultural context of Bangkok, where they will spend a two-weeks residency. Meanwhile, Thai artists will join them in order to prepare together a group show to complete the project. Each artist will have two weeks to create one or several pieces on site (they will use the empty TARS Gallery as their studio), using the materials they can find there, either buying production material, finding them, exchanging them or by any other means of diffusion and circulation of goods.
